Eye Nutrients: Lutein & Zeaxanthin

Lutein & Zeaxanthin are key nutrients for eye health! They help to prevent the development of macular degeneration and cataracts.

EYE HEALTH BENEFITS:

  • Lutein & Zeaxanthin are antioxidants that are found in the macula -- the part of our retina that we use to see our central, fine-detailed vision.

  • These carotenoids protect the retinal cells against oxidative damage from light energy. They absorb blue light and act as natural "sunglasses" or "blue filter"

  • Studies have shown that people who have diets with higher levels of Lutein & Zeaxanthin had a decreased risk of developing Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) - the #1 cause of vision loss in older adults in North America.

  • Lutein & Zeaxanthin are also found in the lens, and reduce the risk of developing cataracts later in life

WHOLE-BODY BENEFITS:

  • Help to maintain healthy skin, and may be protective against cardiovascular disease

What to Eat:

  • LUTEIN: Leafy green vegetables, broccoli, egg yolks

  • ZEAXANTHIN: Orange bell peppers, goji berries

  • Pairing Lutein & Zeaxanthin with a healthy fat (e.g. olive oil, avocado, nuts) helps to optimize nutrient absorption

  • Supplementation with Lutein & Zeaxanthin are recommended for individuals with a hereditary predisposition to ARMD, or who are in early stages of ARMD. Talk to your eye doctor about which supplement to take.
