Eye Nutrients: Lycopene

Sarah Oh

What to eat for optimal eye health?

EYE HEALTH BENEFITS

  • Your eyes are vulnerable to free radical damage because they're constantly exposed to light energy, oxygen, and air pollutants

  • Lycopene is a phytonutrient that protects the body from oxidative stress. It helps to neutralize these free radicals and protect the eye tissues

  • Lycopene lowers the risk of developing cataracts and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)

WHOLE BODY BENEFITS

  • Lycopene reduces the risk of developing heart disease and certain cancers (lung cancer, prostate or cervical cancer)

What to Eat:

  • Lycopene is found in RED foods

  • Tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit, blood oranges, apricots, guavas, persimmons, etc. are all good sources of lycopene

According to Statistics Canada, over half (59%) of Canadian adults are NOT eating enough vegetables & fruit in their diet (5 servings a day is recommended).

Try to find ways to incorporate more healthy colourful foods in your meals to reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases.
